Why San José
A town to wander, not a resort strip to rush through.
San José del Cabo is the quieter, more cultural half of the Los Cabos trip: a historic center for walking and dinner, with beaches, surf, resorts and farm roads spread beyond it.
San José del Cabo has two very different centers of gravity. Around Plaza Mijares and the mission, streets lead into galleries, boutique stays and some of the most distinctive restaurants in San José del Cabo. Along the coast, the hotel zone, Costa Azul and Palmilla trade the old-town rhythm for beaches, surf and larger Los Cabos hotels and resorts.
Beyond both sits a third version of the destination: Puerto Los Cabos, the estuary and the farm roads of Ánimas Bajas. That is where a short-looking plan can become a full day. It also opens the door to Los Cabos tours and activities, from a Costa Azul surf lesson to a desert UTV route, plus public-access golf courses near San José del Cabo.
For a first visit, build one day around a beach or outdoor experience and another around the historic center. Leave the car before dinner, walk the Gallery District and check the seasonal San José del Cabo Art Walk calendar. The signature evening
Thursday changes the center.
During the published Art Walk season, galleries stay open later and the streets around the historic center become the evening’s main route. The galleries are still worth visiting on quieter days; Thursday simply turns the district into a shared event.
Start before sunset, leave time for Plaza Mijares, and reserve dinner if the date falls in high season. Schedules can change around holidays, so confirm the current calendar before building the night around it.
A first day
Three moves. One unhurried route.
The mistake is treating every San José stop as if it sits around the same plaza.
Start with nature or water.
Choose the estuary for a quiet walk, Palmilla for a calmer beach morning, or Costa Azul when surf is the point.
Make lunch the destination.
Head inland for a farm table, or stay near the center and give the galleries more time than a quick pass.
Return to the historic center.
Walk Plaza Mijares, browse the Art District and let dinner close the loop without another long transfer.

Is San José del Cabo walkable?
The historic center and Gallery District are compact enough to explore on foot. The hotel zone, Costa Azul, Palmilla, Puerto Los Cabos and the farm restaurants sit in separate pockets and usually require a car, taxi or arranged ride.
Should I stay downtown or by the beach?
Stay downtown for galleries, independent restaurants and a smaller boutique-hotel rhythm. Choose the hotel zone or coastal resorts for pools, beach access and larger facilities. Neither option gives you every version of San José without transportation.
When is the San José del Cabo Art Walk?
The Art Walk is a seasonal Thursday-evening event in the Gallery District. Its calendar can change around summer and holidays, so verify the current schedule before planning a trip around one evening.
Which beaches work best near San José del Cabo?
Palmilla is the best-known protected cove and is often the easiest choice for a calmer swim. Costa Azul is known for surf. Conditions change, so always follow the flag and lifeguard guidance posted on the beach.
Do I need restaurant reservations?
For destination farm restaurants, fine dining and Thursday evenings in the center, reservations are a good idea and can be essential in high season. Casual daytime stops are generally easier, but hours still change seasonally.
How is San José different from Cabo San Lucas?
San José is calmer, more spread out and more centered on galleries, dining and residential neighborhoods. Cabo San Lucas is denser around the marina, nightlife and excursion departure points. They are two towns, not adjoining districts.
