A walk through a creative neighbourhood

What is the San José del Cabo Art Walk?

The San José del Cabo Art Walk is a free evening walk through the historic Gallery District, where galleries open late on Thursdays during the season. Walk from paintings to sculpture, meet gallery teams and discover exhibitions at your own pace. The surrounding streets add music, food and conversation to an evening that begins with the art inside.

Art Walk means a walk between places that show art—a caminata del arte, as the official Spanish-language visitor guide describes it. Choose the order, linger where something catches your eye, and step into the next gallery when you are ready. Explore independently at your own pace and contact the galleries directly with any questions.

The Gallery District is a walkable neighbourhood in San José del Cabo’s historic centre. The galleries, restaurants, shops and streets around Plaza Mijares form the experience; it is a district to explore, rather than one building or just the main square.

The place behind the evening

A historic town. A shared idea.

The Art Walk grew from galleries working together. Their invitation was simple: leave the main square, follow the side streets and come inside to look at art.

Long before the galleries, the freshwater estuary made this an important place. The municipal history records the Pericú name Añuití and the founding of the mission in 1730. That date belongs to the mission’s story; it does not mark the beginning of human life here, the age of every building you see, or the start of the Art Walk.

The modern gallery scene took shape in the early 2000s. The association credits Old Town artists with helping bring the district to life, then describes a shared effort to draw visitors into the streets behind the church. As the Thursday walk grew, Obregón was closed to through traffic on Art Walk evenings. Openings and artist appearances gave people reasons to return.

The artists give that shared idea its variety. Frank Arnold’s gallery and working studio bring together his abstract-figurative paintings and bronze sculptures. Iván Guaderrama explores contemporary Christian themes through painting, sculpture and selected interactive works that add motion and sound through a mobile app.

Alongside these individual practices, Galería de Ida Victoria, Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery and Galería Corsica introduce visitors to work by multiple contemporary artists. La Sacristía adds traditional Mexican arts and craftsmanship. Together, these different approaches make the district a place to discover many artistic voices.

When did the Art Walk begin?

The surviving accounts give different dates. A signed Los Cabos Guide report published in April 2012 traced the first collaborative walk to 2001; a later Club Solaris guide uses 2006. The association’s account describes the gallery-led initiative without settling the difference. The modern district’s story is therefore best placed in the early 2000s.

The historic centre also holds Mexico’s Barrio Mágico designation, which recognises a distinctive neighbourhood within a city.

Use Plaza Mijares and the mission as landmarks, then explore Álvaro Obregón and the adjoining streets at your own pace. For current hours and gallery-specific questions, use the direct contacts above.

  1. Get your bearings

Begin around Plaza Mijares and the mission. Choose a meeting point if your group plans to split up.

  2. Step into the galleries

Walk into the nearby blocks around Obregón and turn into the surrounding streets when a gallery interests you. The exhibition spaces are an important part of the experience.

  3. Leave room for a slower stop

Make time for a conversation, a second look at a painting, or a gallery away from the busiest corner. Comonfort is one reason to explore beyond the main strip.

  4. Build dinner around your visit

Choose a nearby restaurant and work around your reservation. Leave some flexible time rather than trying to fit every gallery into one evening.

Allow about two hours for a first look, and longer if you want to talk, browse several galleries or include dinner. This is a planning suggestion; you decide the pace.

Art Walk hours, season and access

Art Walk hours & visiting tips.

When to go

The official Thursday evening normally runs from 5 to 9 pm during the November–June season. Confirm your date around holidays: individual galleries and restaurants can close earlier or choose not to open.

What is free

The public walk and visits to participating galleries during Art Walk are free. Explore independently without a ticket or guide; food, drinks and art purchases are paid separately.

Getting there

Ask your driver for the historic centre of San José del Cabo. Allow extra time to arrive and park on busy Thursdays; street access and closures can vary.

Walking and access

Wear comfortable shoes for uneven street surfaces. For a step-free visit, contact the galleries you want to see about entrances and interior levels rather than assuming every building has the same access.

Children and companions

Choose stops around the interests of your group. Ask before touching artworks, taking photographs or using a flash, and follow each gallery’s instructions for interactive pieces.

Saturdays and other days

You can visit galleries, restaurants and shops on Saturdays and other days when those businesses are open. This is a normal visit to the district; the official coordinated Art Walk evening is Thursday. Check individual hours before leaving.

If a piece stays with you

Bring home a work, and its story.

You can enjoy the evening simply by looking. If you are considering a purchase, start a conversation about the actual piece rather than relying on a photograph or a general gallery description.

Understand the work

Ask for the artist, title, medium, dimensions and date. Clarify whether it is a painting, an original print in an edition or a reproduction, and what documentation accompanies it.

Confirm the price and availability

Get a quote for that particular piece, with currency, framing and any additional services stated. A work pictured on a website may already have sold.

Plan the journey home

Discuss packing, delivery, insurance and timing before paying. Ask who will coordinate the shipment and which services the written quote includes.

Good to know

Season, summer & opening hours

Does Art Walk only run from November to June?

The official Art Walk season normally runs from November to June, with the main event on Thursday evenings. The Gallery District does not close when that season ends: galleries, restaurants, shops and bars are independent businesses, and many continue operating throughout the year. Confirm the hours of the places you want to visit.

Is there an Art Walk during the summer?

The full coordinated Art Walk experience normally does not run during the summer. You can still explore the district, visit businesses that are open and find artists, visitors and activity in the historic centre. The pace is usually quieter, and individual businesses may change their hours.

When does the Art Walk season begin again?

The official season normally begins in November; check the event calendar for the current opening date. By mid- or late October, some galleries and businesses may already be preparing for the season, so the area can start to feel livelier. That preparation does not replace the official opening date.

What day and time is the San José del Cabo Art Walk?

The coordinated gallery walk usually runs on Thursdays from 5 to 9 pm, local time, during the November–June season. Use the event calendar linked above for the current season and confirm special dates with participating galleries.

Is there an official Art Walk on Saturdays?

The official Gallery District Art Walk takes place on Thursdays. On Saturdays, galleries, restaurants and shops may be open according to their own schedules, and there may be other independent cultural activities. Visiting the district on a Saturday is different from attending the coordinated Thursday evening.

Why do some people say Art Walk runs all year?

People often use “Art Walk” to mean the wider Gallery District. The neighbourhood can have activity throughout the year because independent galleries, restaurants, shops and artists continue working outside the official season. A visit to the district does not necessarily mean the seasonal Thursday Art Walk is taking place.

Does Art Walk take place on holidays such as Christmas or New Year?

There may be activity when a Thursday falls on a holiday, but each gallery, restaurant and business decides its opening hours. Some may close early or remain closed. Check the event calendar and the places you want to visit, especially when planning around Christmas or New Year.

Planning your gallery visit

Where exactly does the San José del Cabo Art Walk take place?

In the Gallery District of San José del Cabo’s historic centre, around Plaza Mijares and the nearby streets behind the mission. It is a walkable neighbourhood of galleries, restaurants, shops and other local businesses, rather than a single building or just the main square.

Is the event at Plaza Amelia Wilkes the same as the San José del Cabo Art Walk?

No. The San José del Cabo Art Walk takes place in the Gallery District near Plaza Mijares on Thursday evenings during its season. ¡Viva la Plaza! at Plaza Amelia Wilkes is a separate arts and culture programme in Cabo San Lucas, with its own organisers and calendar. Check the Viva la Plaza calendar linked in Sources for the current day and hours; the San José Thursday schedule does not apply.

Is Art Walk free to visit?

Yes. Walking the Gallery District and visiting participating galleries during Art Walk is free. You can explore independently at your own pace, without a ticket or guide. Food, drinks and art purchases are paid separately.

Can I enjoy it without buying art?

Yes. Looking at the work, talking to gallery teams and discovering the neighbourhood are part of the visit. A purchase is optional.

Will the artist be there?

Some evenings include openings or artist appearances. Ask the gallery about the date you are visiting; a working studio or a represented artist does not guarantee an in-person meeting.

Are all the artists local to Los Cabos?

The district brings together artists and works from Los Cabos, other parts of Mexico and other countries. Ask about the maker and origin of a particular piece rather than assuming every work sold here was made in Baja.

Can galleries ship a purchase home?

Several galleries offer help with packing and shipping. Confirm the arrangements, destination, insurance, timing and full written quote with the business selling the work.

Artists & exhibition spaces in the plaza

Can I rent a space or set up a table in the plaza during Art Walk?

The participating galleries do not manage vendor spaces, tables or permits in the main plaza. Contact the relevant municipal authorities or the organisers responsible for Jardín del Arte to ask about availability, permits, costs and current participation requirements.

Who organises the artists and vendors in the plaza?

Plaza exhibitions and vendor spaces are organised separately from the participating galleries’ programme. For a place in a public space, ask the municipality or the organisers responsible for that location who handles allocation and the current participation conditions.

Are the artists in the plaza part of the official Gallery District Art Walk?

Not necessarily. Independent artists and vendors may be present around the plaza, especially on busy evenings, but their participation varies by day and season. The official Art Walk focuses on the participating galleries and businesses in the Gallery District.
