El Barrio is the Mexican restaurant at Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, set on covered beachfront terraces at the resort in Puerto Los Cabos, San José del Cabo. It serves breakfast and lunch every day from 7 AM to 5 PM, then opens in the evening for two themed nights: La Cantina on Wednesday, with live mariachi and a four-course menu, and Tequila, Tacos & Salsa on Sunday, with a live salsa band and tacos à la carte. It describes itself as a taqueria, a cantina or a grandparents' home by turns, with traditional recipes given a contemporary twist. The terraces look out over the Sea of Cortez, the walls are painted pink and turquoise with large murals, and every table is set with brightly colored plates and glassware.
The name comes from the Mexican barrio, the neighborhood where people from all walks of life gather, and the restaurant brings that spirit to the table with color, music and a blend of traditional and high-end Mexican cooking. Its chef, Mel Valverde, builds her menus on the flavors, ingredients and ancestral techniques of Mexican cuisine. When the resort outfitted its restaurants, executive chef Nicolás Oviedo and the food and beverage team traveled across Mexico to find artisan-designed pieces for every table. Breakfast runs from smoothies and mimosas to torrejas and sweet corn pancakes; lunch adds a raw bar, tacos, tortas and a wood-fired oven. Zadún opened in 2019 as the first Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Mexico, and the dining notes of Forbes Travel Guide's inspectors for the resort begin with breakfast at El Barrio.
