The name is on record since the early 1800s. Legends tell of a trans-Pacific ship that left sailors dead of typhus here, of colonists lost to an epidemic, and of a foreign crew buried after an outbreak in 1860. The coast is now marketed as Bahía de los Sueños, the Bay of Dreams.
