A DIFFERENT WAY TO LOOK
Start with what you see.
Stay with what you feel.
A figure seems to emerge from a field of color. A bronze silhouette changes as you walk around it. Here, the pleasure is in looking closely: large oil paintings, sculptural forms and the surroundings where an artist develops his work.
You can visit beyond the Thursday Art Walk. Check the gallery’s regular hours below.
A CLOSER LOOK
Color. Shape. A human presence.
These examples from the artist’s online collection introduce two sides of his practice: expressive oil paintings and cast bronze figures. They are a starting point for looking, rather than a promise of what is currently on display or available.

Frank Arnold · Painter & sculptor
A childhood eye for color.
In his 2018 International Artist Day interview, Arnold recalls winning a flower-arranging contest as a child. The possibilities of combining colors helped spark the interest that later led him into fine art. He trained in realistic painting and drawing before developing his abstract approach.

Arnold also raced cars professionally. In his MAC interview, he connects racing and art through the concentration and willingness to take risks that both demand.
Frank on his earlier careerMEET THE ARTIST
The artist behind the forms.
Born in Long Beach, California, and raised in the San Joaquin Valley, Frank Arnold works in abstract figurative painting and sculpture. His practice spans painting in San José del Cabo and sculpting in Mexico City.
He calls his recurring figures “Messengers.” In a published MAC Art Galleries interview, he traces them back to art school and explains that their meaning develops through the viewer’s own experience. He describes his creative process as intuitive, allowing images to emerge rather than planning a scene in advance.
“Abstract art is silent music.”
— Frank Arnold
Look for the 8.
The number recurs throughout his work. In the artist’s own explanation, it connects to a discovery about his adoption at age eight and the independence he built from that experience. It offers a personal clue to paintings that can first seem mysterious.
Why San José del Cabo?
Asked why he chose a studio here, Arnold spoke of his lifelong affection for Mexico, the value placed on art, and the beauty, people and sense of community that drew him to San José. Those are his own reasons, shared in his 2018 interview.
Read Frank’s answerA book that began in the gallery.
Your Creative Imagination Unlocked grew from conversations in Arnold’s Mexican gallery with depth psychologist Dr. Jim Manganiello, as Boston University’s profile of Manganiello records. It brings together writing and artwork to explore creative imagination. Arnold has also published a bilingual biography about his life and work.

More about the artistJUST ACROSS THE STREET
Let the visit continue outdoors.
Plaza Frank Arnold is the gallery’s sculpture garden across the street. Moving from canvas to an outdoor figure changes the encounter: light, sky and your own viewpoint become part of what you notice.
Look for Alma de Cabo.
The bronze figure on the plaza pedestal is identified as Alma de Cabo. Arnold’s own catalogue lists the sculpture at 150 inches tall—about 3.8 meters. Take a few steps around it to see how its silhouette changes.
