The place behind the evening
A historic town. A shared idea.
The Art Walk grew from galleries working together. Their invitation was simple: leave the main square, follow the side streets and come inside to look at art.
Long before the galleries, the freshwater estuary made this an important place. The municipal history records the Pericú name Añuití and the founding of the mission in 1730. That date belongs to the mission’s story; it does not mark the beginning of human life here, the age of every building you see, or the start of the Art Walk.
The modern gallery scene took shape in the early 2000s. The association credits Old Town artists with helping bring the district to life, then describes a shared effort to draw visitors into the streets behind the church. As the Thursday walk grew, Obregón was closed to through traffic on Art Walk evenings. Openings and artist appearances gave people reasons to return.
The artists give that shared idea its variety. Frank Arnold’s gallery and working studio bring together his abstract-figurative paintings and bronze sculptures. Iván Guaderrama explores contemporary Christian themes through painting, sculpture and selected interactive works that add motion and sound through a mobile app.
Alongside these individual practices, Galería de Ida Victoria, Patricia Mendoza Art Gallery and Galería Corsica introduce visitors to work by multiple contemporary artists. La Sacristía adds traditional Mexican arts and craftsmanship. Together, these different approaches make the district a place to discover many artistic voices.
When did the Art Walk begin?
The surviving accounts give different dates. A signed Los Cabos Guide report published in April 2012 traced the first collaborative walk to 2001; a later Club Solaris guide uses 2006. The association’s account describes the gallery-led initiative without settling the difference. The modern district’s story is therefore best placed in the early 2000s.
The historic centre also holds Mexico’s Barrio Mágico designation, which recognises a distinctive neighbourhood within a city.
