The course
From the start ramp the race drops into the San José arroyo and heads to the East Cape (Cabo Pulmo, La Ribera, Los Barriles). It then runs north past La Paz to Loreto and San José de Comondú, reaches the Pacific side near Puerto Adolfo López Mateos and heads back south through Santa Fe and past Todos Santos and Pescadero. The final 15 miles run through the San José arroyo to the finish.
SCORE labels its map preliminary and its mileage approximate. The preliminary map does not show the race line crossing Cabo San Lucas, and the final GPS route is due on October 22. See the official course map.
Why this year matters
The Baja 1000 has been held every year since 1967, except 1974, when a fuel crisis canceled it. SCORE International, founded in 1973, organizes it today. The race finished in Cabo San Lucas in 2000 and 2007, but it had never started or finished in San José del Cabo before this edition, according to SCORE's list of past start and finish cities. San José is also only the second city in Baja California Sur to host the start, after La Paz in 2023.
